Ethics Bowl was originally from the United States. In its first years, it was among colleges and universities, namely the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. In 2013, led by University of North Carolina’s Parr Center for Ethics, the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) introduced this format to more than 1,000 high school students from 11 states in the US. Since then, the NHSEB has grown both in its scale and popularity in the US, and even around the world. In the 2019-2020 season, the NHSEB served nearly 5,000 students from 31 states.
Inspired by the NHSEB, we brought this event to Shanghai, China. In our inaugural year, we’ve received numerous support from the UNC staff, including an Ethics Bowl online session for our participants. In this session, NHSEB director Alex Richardson, and undergraduates of UNC who are previously judges, coaches, or participants, shared with us some valuable advice on preparing the Ethics Bowl.
